STUDENT COMMUNITY

The M.S. in Sustainability Management program’s students represent a cross-section of the industries and organizations currently incorporating sustainable initiatives into their day-to-day operations as well as those who are looking to make a career switch. The program’s students are dedicated not only to mastering the theory and science of sustainability, they are passionate about putting their education into practice.

Student Spotlight: Q&A with Sustainability Management Student Hezekiah Williams

Sustainability Management M.S. student Hezekiah Williams has been on a mission to build community among his peers at the School of Professional Studies. A native of Edwards, Mississippi, and graduate of Jackson State University, Williams is a Columbia HBCU Fellow, an officer in the SPS Student Government (SPSSG), and an SPSSG Ambassador to the school’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee. He was most recently named the recipient of the Student Dean’s Excellence Award as well as the Campbell Award in recognition of his academic excellence, professional promise, and commitment to building University community and pride. After Columbia, Williams will begin a doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Notre Dame. He spoke to us about how he aims to contribute to a more inclusive environment through his work with the DEIA Committee.

Maya Ezzeddine always had an interest in sustainable cities and building design. She is now the manager of New York Passive House, a local non-profit dedicated to promoting the international Passive House standard.

Focusing on Ecosystems to Reduce Disaster Risks

Master of Science in Sustainability Management alum Alia'a Harun was drawn to the program because of its interdisciplinary approach towards a pragmatic implementation of sustainability and believes the program has helped her communicate and think about environmental challenges in a more critical and holistic way. Alia'a has a background in ecology and wants to apply her knowledge to protect the natural environment and the services it provides.

Effective Communication Helps Lower Energy Use

Master of Science in Sustainability Management alum Jocelyn Gan is an Energy & Sustainability Specialist at NYU Langone Health. She took advantage of the program's curriculum to focus her studies on operations and supply chain management, as she prepares for a career in corporate sustainability.

Alum Chris Meissner started the Master of Science in Sustainability Management program to make a career change from strategy and corporate development into water related issues. He currently serves as the director of Strategy and Sustainability at GCH Partners.

Streamlining National Recycling Programs

Sustainability Management student Jeremy Simpson joined the program because it allowed him to examine his interests in economics, business, and operations research through the lens of sustainability. Jeremy was inspired to work in sustainability because he believes that it is the best way to make a positive impact globally, which he has achieved in his analyst role at Recylebank.
