STUDENT COMMUNITY

The M.S. in Sustainability Management program’s students represent a cross-section of the industries and organizations currently incorporating sustainable initiatives into their day-to-day operations as well as those who are looking to make a career switch. The program’s students are dedicated not only to mastering the theory and science of sustainability, they are passionate about putting their education into practice.

Student Spotlight: Q&A with Sustainability Management Student Hezekiah Williams

Sustainability Management M.S. student Hezekiah Williams has been on a mission to build community among his peers at the School of Professional Studies. A native of Edwards, Mississippi, and graduate of Jackson State University, Williams is a Columbia HBCU Fellow, an officer in the SPS Student Government (SPSSG), and an SPSSG Ambassador to the school’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee. He was most recently named the recipient of the Student Dean’s Excellence Award as well as the Campbell Award in recognition of his academic excellence, professional promise, and commitment to building University community and pride. After Columbia, Williams will begin a doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Notre Dame. He spoke to us about how he aims to contribute to a more inclusive environment through his work with the DEIA Committee.

Student Seeks to Make Sustainability an Indispensable Business Practice

Prior to his enrollment as a full-time graduate student, Jon worked in the Warfighter Readiness Research Division of the United States Air Force Research Laboratory and was later a project manager at two mid-sized consulting companies. Jon is currently an intern for the Office of Academic Research and Programs at the Earth Institute, where he helps to coordinate corporate participation for Sustainability Management program sponsored events.

Student Tackles Challenges for a Sustainable Future

Prior to her enrollment as a full-time graduate student, Emily oversaw the strategic direction and management of the Natural Step Canada's Sustainability Learning program as well as the facilitation and animation of the Exchange – a learning network for sustainability professionals in Canada. She has experiences in planning, incubating and managing the Sprout e-course for TakingITGlobal, a program designed for aspiring social innovators and environmental entrepreneurs to grow project ideas and learn to create lasting changes in their communities.

Sustainability Student Explains How "Smart Buildings" Are Better

Greg joined Columbia's Sustainability Management program as a part-time student in Fall 2010. The program, co-sponsored by the Earth Institute and Columbia's School of Continuing Education, trains students to tackle complex and pressing environmental and managerial challenges. "The M.S. in Sustainability Management program is well-rounded and covers many disciplines that comprise the very nature of sustainability," says Greg.
