STUDENT COMMUNITY

The M.S. in Sustainability Management program’s students represent a cross-section of the industries and organizations currently incorporating sustainable initiatives into their day-to-day operations as well as those who are looking to make a career switch. The program’s students are dedicated not only to mastering the theory and science of sustainability, they are passionate about putting their education into practice.

Student Spotlight: Q&A with Sustainability Management Student Hezekiah Williams

Sustainability Management M.S. student Hezekiah Williams has been on a mission to build community among his peers at the School of Professional Studies. A native of Edwards, Mississippi, and graduate of Jackson State University, Williams is a Columbia HBCU Fellow, an officer in the SPS Student Government (SPSSG), and an SPSSG Ambassador to the school’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee. He was most recently named the recipient of the Student Dean’s Excellence Award as well as the Campbell Award in recognition of his academic excellence, professional promise, and commitment to building University community and pride. After Columbia, Williams will begin a doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Notre Dame. He spoke to us about how he aims to contribute to a more inclusive environment through his work with the DEIA Committee.

Student Connects to Sustainability Network In and Out of the Classroom

After earning her BS in Design and Environmental Analysis from Cornell, MS in Sustainability Management student, Nicole deFuria, went on to work at Verizon as a member of its corporate real estate team where she assisted with real estate operations and portfolio management. Currently, Nicole is a Project Manager on Verizon's Corporate Sustainability Team. Nicole joined the program in spring 2011 as a part-time student

On Tuesday, April 24, students in the Master of Science in Sustainability Management presented their final Capstone Workshop presentations for fellow students, program faculty, and colleagues at Columbia University's Faculty House.

Student Transitions from Financial Services to Sustainability Management

Prior to Columbia, Scott served as the Director of Training and an Investment Specialist at AXA Equitable and was most recently the Vice President, Director of Marketing at Oppenheimer Funds, an asset management company. Scott was also the director of the company's Go Green Committee, a grassroots turned executive-level sponsored initiative that he started in 2010. Scott is a LEED Green Associate, GreenHomeNYC volunteer and co-director of Seward Park Co-op community garden.

Student Creates a Hospitable Environment for Sustainability

Prior to her enrollment as a part-time graduate student, Diana earned a Bachelor's Degree majoring in Travel and Tourism Management and minoring in Lodging Hotel operations from Florida International University. From December of 2008 until March of 2012, Diana was the Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at the Grand Hyatt New York – a position that was created specifically for her. With the grass roots experience gained from Hyatt, she moved to make a larger impact in the industry by joining the Wyndham Worldwide Corporate Sustainability and Innovation team in March 2012 and supporting over 7,000 business units.

Student Finds His Cause in Sustainability for Architecture Industry

Prior to his enrollment as a full-time graduate student, Craig founded, owned, and operated The Archive, a media center and café in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Currently, Craig is a Partner and the Director of Business Operations at Hoberman Associates, an integrated design and engineering consultancy that works with the Architecture, Product Design, and Entertainment sectors.
