STUDENT COMMUNITY

The M.S. in Sustainability Management program’s students represent a cross-section of the industries and organizations currently incorporating sustainable initiatives into their day-to-day operations as well as those who are looking to make a career switch. The program’s students are dedicated not only to mastering the theory and science of sustainability, they are passionate about putting their education into practice.

Student Spotlight: Q&A with Sustainability Management Student Hezekiah Williams

Sustainability Management M.S. student Hezekiah Williams has been on a mission to build community among his peers at the School of Professional Studies. A native of Edwards, Mississippi, and graduate of Jackson State University, Williams is a Columbia HBCU Fellow, an officer in the SPS Student Government (SPSSG), and an SPSSG Ambassador to the school’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee. He was most recently named the recipient of the Student Dean’s Excellence Award as well as the Campbell Award in recognition of his academic excellence, professional promise, and commitment to building University community and pride. After Columbia, Williams will begin a doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Notre Dame. He spoke to us about how he aims to contribute to a more inclusive environment through his work with the DEIA Committee.

Student Earns Recognition as Corporate Social Responsibility Leader

Pamela Alabaster joined the program after a corporate sustainability appointment at L'Oréal USA with the express purpose of honing her skills in the corporate social responsibility field. Through meaningful lectures and applicable project-based coursework, Pamela has acquired the practical knowledge and understanding in the field and has been recognized by the industry for her innovative work.

M.S. in Sustainability Management (MSSM) alum Emily Dawson credits her parents and undergraduate studies at Middlebury College with instilling an interest in sustainability and sense of urgency for our warming planet.

MS Student Presents Sustainable Solutions for NYC Public High School

Prior to completing the MS in Sustainability Management program in December 2011, Sarah Bacon conducted a sustainability assessment of a public school in New York City for her independent capstone thesis. Sarah used the CO2 conversion factors of PlaNYC, the agenda created by Mayor Bloomberg to create a greener New York City and in doing so; improve the quality of life for its inhabitants.

Unique Career Path: Utah Ski Slopes to NYC Sustainability Consulting and Columbia

MS in Sustainability Management (MSSM) student, Josh Rosenfield, has been working in sustainable business for the past ten years. After spending three years managing Deloitte's internal sustainability program, he transitioned into a role that focuses on client services, as a manager with Deloitte's Global Sustainability and Climate Change Services team. The team sets the strategy for Deloitte's network of more than 750 sustainability services practitioners around the world and manages various programs in support of their work.

Student Goes the Extra Mile for Earth Institute Programs

As most people were heading out to visit nearby parks, beaches and museums to take advantage of the nice weather last week, MSSM student Scott Miller was embarking on a different kind of trip. Miller, long an advocate of sustainability, set out on a trip to ride his bike over 300 miles from New York to Washington, D.C., in an effort to raise money and awareness for Earth Institute programs through the non-profit organization Climate Ride.
