Learn about diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within Columbia University's Sustainability Management program. Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In The M.S. In Sustainability Management Program The Graduate Programs in Sustainability Management & Sustainability Science and co-sponsors – The Earth Institute/Climate School and the School of Professional Studies –are committed to anti-racism. From the perspective of our program specifically, anti-racism is especially pertinent because the pursuit of equity is bound with the pursuit of sustainability . The programs have implemented and will continuously implement measures to improve diversity among its faculty, students, and staff, as well as to integrate equity concerns in its curriculum. Historical Overview The SUMA Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee , which was formed in 2020, led the MS in Sustainability Management program's anti-racism work, provided accountability for the implementation of recommendations that emerged from committee discussions, and communicated periodically with students, alumni, and faculty on the program’s progress. The Committee comprised students, alumni, faculty, and staff representatives. Early in this effort, we deemed it important to conduct a DE&I Audit that would set a baseline of performance, as well produce new strategies for improvement. Conducted by Iere Strategies , a consulting team of social scientists with long experience in DE&I work, the audit was complex. It involved surveying students, faculty, and staff, in-depth interviews on a voluntary basis, an examination of program data, and an analysis of the program's two required courses (Sustainability Management and the Capstone Workshop), including a review of the syllabi and observations of class sessions. Additionally, The student representatives comprised the SUMA Equity Alliance , a new student group supported by the School of Professional Studies. The Committee met throughout the year to discuss initiatives and assess progress. The Committee's goals were as outlined: 1) Diversify the student body, faculty, and staff 2) Create an inclusive environment in the program 3) Integrate equity in concerns into the curriculum Spring 2022 & Beyond As the programs have grown tremendously, so have the DE&I efforts. We transitioned from committee work to a fully operational DEI Initiatives division, led by Dr. John Williams, Director of Student Affairs & DEI. Now with the theme DEI in ACTION , the Sustainability Programs are ensuring that DEI is commonplace in all that we do! DEI in ACTION! Explore sustainability management and sustainable development through Columbia's accelerated program for future sustainability leaders. Accelerated Program: Sustainability Management and Sustainable Development Sustainable Development (B.A.) and Sustainability Management (M.S.) The combined Sustainable Development and Sustainability Management program — in collaboration with The Earth Institute, Columbia College, the School of General Studies, and the School of Professional Studies — prepares students to become sustainability practitioners. Students are trained to understand the world's complex environmental challenges and develop practical skills in management, quantitative analysis, and sustainability to transform how organizations do business. Students earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree in just five years. Undergraduates in the Sustainable Development program at Columbia University are uniquely prepared for this graduate program, having undertaken interdisciplinary studies focused on the natural and social sciences, as well as the theory and practice of sustainable development. Students develop expertise in critical areas, such as food, water, health, and climate change, and they are trained in essential skill areas, such as economic analysis and GIS modeling. Building upon the strong foundation of their undergraduate coursework, students accepted into the Sustainability Management program will learn to draw from interdisciplinary perspectives in general and financial management, quantitative analysis, public policy, and the physical dimensions of sustainability. Students will receive practical professional training to help them understand the systematic and organizational role of sustainability in any organization. Kaitlin Reese (’25SPS, Sustainability Management) began her journey in sustainability as an Environmental Studies major at Haverford College. After graduating, she worked for the San Francisco Department of the Environment, which sparked her interest in the circular economy, an economic system that minimizes waste and maximizes resource use by reusing, repairing, recycling, and regenerating materials to keep them in circulation for as long as possible. Focused on solar, wind, hydrogen, and biofuels, he tailored his coursework to gain both technical and strategic insight into the evolving energy landscape. Now a SUMA alum, Gary remains passionate about developing and implementing large-scale sustainability initiatives in New York’s transportation industry. The SUMA program offered Gary an opportunity to learn from faculty who are leaders in their fields and join a robust and widespread alumni network, which he says exceeded his expectations. As sustainability manager at JFK Terminal 4, Gary has already overseen the achievement of a LEED platinum certification and the title of 'Greenest Aiport Terminal', but he aims to continue to develop relationships with high-value partners and guide JFKIAT to its net-zero goal.
